Tatu City Water Supply and Irrigation Project, New City
Project Overview
Bosch Water designed and implemented a state-of-the-art water supply and irrigation system for Tatu City, one of Africa’s largest new urban developments. Engineered to serve a future population of 500,000 residents, the system integrates high-capacity transmission mains, automated pumping stations, storage reservoirs, smart metering, and a dedicated irrigation network for green spaces and agricultural zones.
The Challenge
Tatu City required water infrastructure capable of matching the scale and ambition of a full-fledged new city. The key challenges included:
- Delivering potable water to a rapidly developing, multi-zone urban environment
- Managing water pressure across varying elevations and distances
- Providing irrigation for extensive green spaces and agricultural plots without straining the potable water supply
- Ensuring long-term sustainability, scalability, and operational efficiency
- Meeting Kenyan water quality and environmental regulations
Our Solution
Bosch Water was engaged to design and implement a phased, state-of-the-art water supply and irrigation system built to grow with the city.
- Water Supply System
-
- Designed a high-capacity transmission and distribution network.
- Installed primary and secondary pumping stations with variable frequency drives (VFDs) for energy efficiency.
- Constructed and integrated storage reservoirs to buffer peak demand and provide emergency reserves.
- Deployed smart metering and SCADA systems for real-time monitoring, leak detection, and demand forecasting.
2. Irrigation Infrastructure
-
- Developed a separate, non-potable irrigation network for landscaping, parks, and agricultural zones.
- Utilized drip irrigation and micro-sprinklers to minimize water waste.
- Integrated rainwater harvesting and treated wastewater reuse where feasible.
3. Smart Technology & Monitoring
-
- SCADA-based real-time monitoring across the entire water network.
- Smart metering for accurate demand tracking and billing.
- Automated leak detection to reduce water losses.
- Remote pump control for optimized energy use and pressure management.
4. Sustainability & Future-Proofing
-
- Modular, phased design that expands as Tatu City grows toward its 500,000-resident target.
- Energy-efficient pumps and gravity-fed sections reduce operational costs and carbon footprint.
- Water reuse and storage strategies reduce reliance on external sources.
- Compliant with Kenyan water quality and environmental standards.
Results & Impact
- Reliable water supply to early-phase residential, commercial, and industrial developments
- Irrigation coverage for public parks, streetscapes, and agricultural plots
- A scalable framework capable of serving the full 500,000-resident population
- Reduced operational costs through smart technology and energy-efficient design
- Reduced water losses and optimized energy use
- A model for integrated urban water management in East Africa
